Arshad Nadeem Aims to Defend Commonwealth Games Javelin Title

Report: Imran Sohail

Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem is preparing to defend his Commonwealth Games javelin title as he begins the final phase of his build-up for this year’s competition in Glasgow.

The 29-year-old athlete will first compete in an international athletics event in Switzerland before heading to the Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2. The warm-up competition is part of his regular preparation strategy before major international tournaments.

Final Preparations Underway

After completing his final training session at Punjab Stadium in Lahore, Arshad said he is satisfied with his preparations and believes competing before a major championship helps him assess his form and readiness.

The Olympic gold medallist explained that participating in a high-level event before a major competition allows him to evaluate his performance and make any final adjustments before the Games begin.

Looking to Defend His Crown

Arshad won the Commonwealth Games gold medal in Birmingham in 2022 with a record-breaking throw of 90.18 metres, a performance that established him as one of the world’s leading javelin throwers.

He acknowledged that returning as the defending champion brings added expectations but said he is focused on delivering another strong performance in Glasgow.

Strong Competition Expected

The Pakistani star believes this year’s javelin event will be highly competitive, with several international athletes producing impressive performances in recent months.

Among the challengers is Sri Lankan thrower Rumesh Tharanga, who recently recorded a throw of 86.57 metres, highlighting the high standard expected at the upcoming Games.

Despite the strong field, Arshad said he is prepared for the challenge and understands the importance of staying mentally composed during competition.

Pakistan’s Medal Hopes

Arshad Nadeem remains one of Pakistan’s biggest medal hopes on the international athletics stage. His Olympic gold medal and record-setting performances have made him one of the country’s most successful athletes, and fans will once again be watching closely as he aims to successfully defend his Commonwealth Games title.
