Pakistan Likely to Increase Diyat Amount for FY2026-27 Following Rise in Silver Prices

ISLAMABAD: The federal government is expected to announce a significant increase in the Diyat (blood money) amount for the fiscal year 2026-27, following a sharp rise in international silver prices.

According to sources, the Finance Division has proposed setting the Diyat amount at Rs. 19.3 million, subject to approval by the federal cabinet.

Proposed Diyat Amount

If approved, the new Diyat value will increase from the current Rs. 9,828,670 to approximately Rs. 19.3 million for the 2026-27 fiscal year.

Under Section 323(2) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), the Diyat amount is calculated based on the value of 30,630 grams of silver. Since silver prices have increased considerably, the compensation amount is also expected to rise.

Annual Revision Based on Silver Prices

The Diyat amount is reviewed every year in line with prevailing market prices of silver.

It serves as financial compensation payable to the legal heirs of a victim in cases where Diyat applies under Pakistani law.

According to sources, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has recommended a higher amount for the new fiscal year after evaluating the latest silver prices.

Approval Process

The proposal will be presented to the federal cabinet for approval. Once approved, the Finance Division is expected to issue an official notification confirming the revised amount.

The updated Diyat value will then apply to relevant legal proceedings and institutions handling Diyat-related cases during the 2026-27 fiscal year.

If finalized, the proposed amount would represent the largest annual increase in the Diyat value, reflecting the substantial rise in silver prices over the past year.
