LESCO Begins Smart Electricity Meter Installation at Punjab Government Departments
Lahore: The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has started a phased initiative to replace conventional electricity meters at Punjab government departments with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart meters.
The project is aimed at improving the accuracy, transparency, and efficiency of electricity metering, billing, and energy monitoring through the use of modern digital technology.
First Phase to Begin in August
According to a LESCO spokesperson, the first phase of the project will begin in August, during which 1,000 single-phase AMI smart meters will be installed at government offices and affiliated institutions.
The decision to implement the program was made during a meeting of Pakistan’s electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) held at the Ministry of Energy.
Thousands of Conventional Meters to Be Replaced
Data from LESCO’s Management Information System (MIS) shows that 8,342 conventional single-phase electricity meters are currently installed at Punjab government departments within the company’s service area.
The distribution of these meters includes:
- Okara Circle: 1,811
- Central Circle: 1,392
- Kasur Circle: 1,195
- Southern Circle: 899
- Nankana Circle: 859
- Northern Circle: 751
- Sheikhupura Circle: 721
- Eastern Circle: 714
Priority Installation Across Service Areas
LESCO has directed all operational circles to obtain the required AMI smart meters and complete installations on a priority basis.
The company has also instructed field offices to update installation records in the Meter Data Management (MDM) system and the Consumer Information Base (CIB) to support efficient monitoring and project implementation.
Purpose of the Initiative
Officials say the introduction of AMI smart meters is expected to improve electricity management by providing more accurate meter readings, enhancing billing efficiency, and enabling better monitoring of power consumption across government institutions.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize Pakistan’s electricity distribution system through the adoption of digital metering technology.
