Venice Increases Security as US Ambassador Tilman Fertitta Arrives Ahead of Major Festival

Venice: Italian authorities have stepped up security measures in Venice after US Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta arrived aboard his superyacht ahead of one of the city’s most significant annual festivals, while local groups announced plans to hold peaceful demonstrations.

Fertitta, a businessman appointed as the US ambassador to Italy, is traveling along the Italian coastline aboard his 117-metre yacht, Boardwalk as part of the “Freedom 250 Coastal Diplomacy Tour,” an initiative marking the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence.

Yacht Arrives in Venice

Escorted by a tugboat, the yacht docked at Riva dei Sette Martiri, located about one kilometre from St. Mark’s Square. Local authorities increased security in anticipation of demonstrations scheduled during the same period as Venice’s annual Festa del Redentore celebrations.

Historic Festival Draws Thousands

The Festa del Redentore is one of Venice’s oldest and most important traditions, commemorating the end of a historic plague outbreak. The festival attracts thousands of residents and visitors each year for religious ceremonies, cultural events, and a large fireworks display over the lagoon.

Planned Demonstrations

A local activist group announced plans for a march under the slogan “Venezia non si Usa” (“Venice Is Not to Be Used”), expressing concerns about the city’s growing role as a venue for high-profile international events.

Venice has seen increasing debate in recent years over the effects of mass tourism and the use of the city for major private gatherings and luxury events.

Political Concerns Raised

Organizers of the demonstration said they intended to express opposition to policies associated with the current US administration. They cited concerns related to international conflicts, economic issues, and global affairs as reasons for the planned protest.

Diplomatic Relations in Focus

The visit also comes amid public attention on recent exchanges between US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. While media reports have highlighted differences between the two leaders on certain issues, Ambassador Fertitta has previously dismissed suggestions that relations between the two countries have significantly deteriorated.

Authorities expect both the festival and the planned demonstrations to proceed under heightened security arrangements as Venice welcomes thousands of visitors over the weekend.
