The United States has introduced new restrictions on the import of certain Chinese-made humanoid robots, robotic devices, and connected power equipment, citing national security concerns.

The new measures, announced by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), took effect this week and apply to newly introduced products that have not yet received authorization for sale in the United States.

FCC Expands Covered Equipment List

The FCC has added advanced robotic devices, including humanoid and four-legged robots, along with connected power inverters, to its list of equipment considered a potential national security or public safety concern.

Power inverters are widely used in solar energy systems, data centers, and other critical power infrastructure.

According to US officials, these connected devices could potentially collect sensitive data or present cybersecurity risks if compromised.

Restrictions Target New Products

The latest rules apply only to new robot and inverter models seeking approval for the US market.

Previously authorized products are not automatically affected, although regulators retain the authority to review or revoke approvals if necessary.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said the move is intended to strengthen the security of critical technology supply chains and reduce potential cybersecurity risks.

Potential Impact on Robotics Industry

The decision is expected to affect several Chinese robotics manufacturers that have recently expanded into commercial markets with humanoid and quadruped robots designed for industrial, commercial, and household applications.

The global robotics sector has seen rapid growth as companies continue investing in AI-powered automation and next-generation robotic systems.

China Responds

Chinese officials criticized the decision, describing it as an unnecessary restriction on technology and trade. They urged greater international cooperation in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies while stating that they would continue to safeguard their commercial interests.

Broader Technology Competition

The latest restrictions come amid ongoing technology-related measures between the United States and China involving semiconductors, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and critical infrastructure.

Both countries continue to invest heavily in emerging technologies as global competition in AI, robotics, and advanced manufacturing accelerates.
