Asian Games 2026: Thailand Badminton Player Faces First Doping Case

Thai badminton player Pitchamon Opatniputh has become the first known doping case at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, according to the International Testing Agency (ITA).

The 19-year-old tested positive for the banned substance furosemide and has been provisionally suspended from the Games.

Pitchamon Tests Positive for Furosemide

Pitchamon, who is ranked 18th in the world, had been scheduled to represent Thailand in the women’s team event against China.

The sample that returned the positive result was collected during out-of-competition testing on September 17.

The ITA said the provisional suspension prevents the player from competing, training, coaching or taking part in any activities at the Asian Games.

Player Can Challenge Suspension

Pitchamon has the right to challenge the provisional suspension through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

She can also request that her B-sample be tested as part of the anti-doping process.

Furosemide is a diuretic that can increase the excretion of water from the body. It can be misused in sport for rapid weight reduction and may also be used to mask the presence of other substances.

Rising Star of Thai Badminton

Pitchamon is considered one of Thailand’s promising young badminton players and has already climbed to No. 18 in the world rankings.

The doping case comes during the opening stages of badminton competition at the Asian Games, where the first full day of action took place on Sunday.
