Former Barcelona winger and Spain international Pedro Rodriguez has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39.
Pedro leaves the sport after a decorated career that included a FIFA World Cup title with Spain, three UEFA Champions League trophies with Barcelona and major domestic honours in Spain and England.
The Tenerife-born forward joined Barcelona’s youth academy as a teenager and made his first-team debut in 2008. He quickly became an important part of Pep Guardiola’s highly successful Barcelona side.
Pedro was part of the team that won six trophies in 2009, an achievement that marked one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
During his Barcelona career, Pedro made 321 appearances and scored 99 goals. He played alongside several of the club’s biggest stars, including Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez.
He also scored in Barcelona’s 2011 Champions League final victory over Manchester United.
In a farewell message, Pedro said he believed the time had come to begin a new chapter in his life. He also expressed pride in having fulfilled his dream of becoming a professional footballer.
Pedro’s success continued at international level. He was part of Spain’s squad that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and also lifted the European Championship trophy in 2012.
He earned 65 appearances for Spain and scored 17 international goals.
In 2015, Pedro moved to Chelsea, where he won the Premier League title in 2017. He also helped the London club secure the FA Cup and Europa League during his time in England.
After leaving Chelsea, Pedro continued his career in Italy with Roma before moving to Lazio. He made more than 200 appearances for Lazio and left the Serie A club at the end of last season.
Reflecting on his career, Pedro said representing Barcelona during its most successful era was a privilege and that winning major trophies while playing alongside some of the game’s greatest players was a memorable experience.
His retirement brings an end to a career spanning more than 18 years at the highest level of European and international football.
