British wildcard Arthur Fery continued his remarkable Wimbledon journey by reaching the men’s singles semifinals with an impressive straight-sets victory on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old, currently ranked No. 114 in the world, defeated ninth seed Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 on Centre Court, delighting the home crowd at the All England Club.
Fery, who received a wildcard entry into the tournament, has become one of the biggest stories of this year’s Wimbledon. Growing up just minutes from the famous venue, he is now only one win away from reaching his first Grand Slam final.
Speaking after the match, Fery admitted he was overwhelmed by his unexpected success.
“It gets better and better every match. I still can’t believe it,” he said after securing his place in the last four.
The Centre Court audience gave the British star multiple standing ovations during the contest. Among the spectators was Queen Camilla, who watched from the Royal Box. Earlier in the tournament, Catherine, Princess of Wales had also attended one of Fery’s matches.
With this achievement, Fery becomes only the second men’s singles wildcard in the Open Era to reach the Wimbledon semifinals, following Goran Ivanišević, who famously won the championship as a wildcard in 2001.
Fery completed the victory with a powerful ace before falling onto the court in celebration, receiving a thunderous ovation from the crowd. His fairytale campaign has made him one of the standout performers of this year’s Wimbledon and raised hopes of an even deeper run in the tournament.
