CDA Advances Rs11.4 Billion Cricket Stadium Project in Islamabad
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has taken another step toward developing a new international-standard cricket stadium in Islamabad by moving closer to the financial bid stage of the project.
According to officials, the shortlisted construction firms have submitted updated stadium designs along with supplementary financial proposals. After the technical review is completed, the CDA is expected to upload the relevant documents to the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority’s (PPRA) e-procurement portal before opening the financial bids.
Planned Near the Margalla Hills
The proposed cricket stadium will be built near Sector D-12 at the foothills of the Margalla Hills, offering scenic views of the surrounding landscape.
Current plans indicate that the venue will have a seating capacity of approximately 32,000 spectators. The project also includes parking facilities for around 10,000 vehicles, with the main public parking area located about one kilometre from the stadium.
Two Joint Ventures in Competition
Two construction consortiums remain in the race for the estimated Rs11.4 billion project:
- Habib Construction in partnership with ZKB-EA
- Lemar Builders in collaboration with BK Consultants Pvt. Ltd.
The project is being executed under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model, under which bidders were required to submit both technical proposals and stadium designs before providing updated financial offers.
Officials said technical experts are currently reviewing the revised designs submitted by both competing firms.
Modern Stadium Inspired by International Standards
The CDA is working in coordination with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to develop a modern venue inspired by internationally recognized cricket stadiums. The new facility is expected to strengthen Islamabad’s ability to host major domestic and international cricket events.
At present, the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium is the primary international cricket venue serving the Islamabad-Rawalpindi region.
Part of a Larger Development Plan
The stadium is planned on approximately 50 acres within the proposed Olympic Village area, which spans around 175 acres.
Officials noted that while sports and recreational development is permitted at the selected site, additional approvals from the federal government may be required for supporting infrastructure such as commercial facilities and a hotel.
Project Moving Toward Next Phase
Authorities say the project has gained momentum after receiving updated designs from the shortlisted bidders. Once the technical evaluation is completed and procurement requirements are fulfilled, the CDA is expected to proceed with opening financial bids before awarding the construction contract.
The project is considered one of the capital city’s major planned sports infrastructure developments and is expected to improve facilities for cricket while supporting future international sporting events in Islamabad.
