COAS Munir stresses potential for ‘broader, multidimensional’ ties with US built on mutual respect

Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir Seeks Stronger Multidimensional Ties with the US During Historic Visit

WASHINGTON, DC: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir emphasized the “immense potential” for a broader, multidimensional relationship between Pakistan and the United States, built on mutual respect and shared strategic interests, during his official five-day visit to the US.

Gen Munir made history by becoming the first-ever serving Pakistani army chief to have a face-to-face meeting with a sitting US president, dining with President Donald Trump. He was accompanied by National Security Advisor Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik.

High-Level Talks and Strategic Exchanges

During his visit, COAS Munir engaged with prominent US think tanks, strategic affairs experts, and international media entities in Washington, DC. The discussions covered a wide array of pressing topics, including regional security, counterterrorism, and economic cooperation.

He highlighted Pakistan’s historical alignment with the US on counterterrorism, regional stability, and mutual economic interests. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to a rules-based international order and regional peace.

Addressing Security Concerns and Terrorism Threats

Munir offered insights on “Operation Bunyanum Marsoos” and “Marka-i-Haq” from Pakistan’s perspective, spotlighting concerns about certain regional actors sponsoring terrorism as part of hybrid warfare.

He reiterated that Pakistan has been on the frontlines of the global war on terrorism, enduring significant human and economic costs. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has previously stated that Pakistan lost nearly 90,000 lives and suffered economic losses of around $150 billion in past decades.

Exploring Economic Opportunities

The army chief invited US and international partners to collaborate in several emerging sectors, highlighting Pakistan’s untapped strengths in:

  • Information Technology

  • Agriculture

  • Mining and Mineral Resources

Gen Munir called for joint ventures that could deliver shared prosperity for Pakistan and its global partners.

Diplomacy, Dialogue & Global Stability

Reaffirming Pakistan’s balanced foreign policy, Gen Munir outlined the country’s preference for dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to international law when addressing regional conflicts. In the context of Middle East tensions, he emphasised Pakistan’s proactive role in regional peace and security.

US analysts and officials praised his transparency and strategic clarity, describing the discussions as positive steps toward strengthening Pakistan-US strategic dialogue.

Looking Ahead

This visit has set the stage for deeper engagement between Pakistan and the US across defense, security, and economic avenues. The COAS’s visit underscores Pakistan’s increasing emphasis on transparent diplomacy, responsible regional leadership, and building cross-border partnerships for sustainable progress.
