FIFA World Cup 2026: Ibrahim Mbaye Makes History with Late Goal for Senegal
Paris Saint-Germain teenager Ibrahim Mbaye delivered a memorable moment at the FIFA World Cup 2026, scoring a late goal for Senegal against France at MetLife Stadium.
The 18-year-old forward came on as a substitute in the final stages of the match when Senegal were trailing 3–0. In the 95th minute of stoppage time, Mbaye produced a brilliant individual effort, beating his defender before finishing calmly past France goalkeeper Mike Maignan. His goal reduced the deficit to 3–1.
Although Senegal lost the match, Mbaye’s goal earned him a place in the record books. At 18 years and 143 days, he became the youngest African player to score in a FIFA World Cup, surpassing the previous record set by Moussa Wagué in 2018.
Globally, only a few players — including Pelé, Manuel Rosas, Gavi, and Lamine Yamal — have scored at a younger age in World Cup history.
Mbaye has been regarded as one of PSG’s most promising young talents. Earlier in the season, he balanced professional football with his education, including sitting important academic exams in France before returning to play for his club on the same day.
Paris Saint-Germain’s academy is known for developing young talent while also emphasizing education. Club officials have highlighted strong academic results among academy players, showing the importance of balancing studies and sport.
Mbaye’s performance against France is being seen as another sign of his growing potential at both club and international level.
