Gutiérrez and Martínez Lead Mexico to 2-0 Win Over Ghana in World Cup Warm-Up

Mexico national football team secured a confident 2-0 victory over Ghana in an international friendly match as part of their preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match was played at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla, where Mexico extended its unbeaten run to six games.

Early breakthrough sets the tone

Midfielder Brian Gutiérrez gave Mexico a dream start by scoring inside the opening two minutes of the match, putting immediate pressure on the opposition.

Striker Guillermo Martínez doubled the lead early in the second half with a well-taken finish in the 52nd minute, sealing the win for the hosts.

Strong build-up to World Cup

Mexico continues to build momentum ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The team’s last defeat came in November against Paraguay, with recent performances showing improved form and stability.

The upcoming tournament will see Mexico begin its campaign on June 11 against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca, followed by group-stage matches against South Korea and the Czech Republic.

Ghana under new coach

Ghana, led by newly appointed coach Carlos Queiroz, fielded a relatively inexperienced squad as the match fell outside the FIFA international window. It marked Queiroz’s first game in charge following his recent appointment.

Match context

The game was not sold out, partly due to FIFA sanctions related to fan misconduct in previous fixtures.
