Henry Nicholls Replaces Kane Williamson as New Zealand Face England in Second Test

June 17, 2026

New Zealand have named Henry Nicholls as the replacement for retired batting great Kane Williamson ahead of the second Test against England, which begins at The Oval on Wednesday.

Williamson stepped away from international cricket following New Zealand’s defeat in the first Test at Lord’s earlier this month, marking the end of a celebrated career as the Black Caps’ leading run-scorer across all formats.

Nicholls Returns to the Test Side

Captain Tom Latham confirmed that Nicholls has been selected ahead of Will Young to fill the crucial number-three batting position.

Nicholls, 34, last played a Test match nearly a year ago against Zimbabwe and returns to the side after strong domestic performances.

Latham expressed confidence in Nicholls’ ability to adapt to different roles in the batting order and contribute to the team’s needs in Williamson’s absence.

Respect for Williamson’s Decision

Williamson’s retirement mid-series came as a setback for New Zealand after their heavy defeat in the opening Test. However, the team management emphasized respect for his decision.

Latham praised Williamson’s honesty and leadership, noting his long-standing contribution to New Zealand cricket and expressing full support for his decision to step away.

Squad Updates Ahead of The Oval Test

New Zealand also received positive news regarding Devon Conway, who is available for selection after briefly returning home for the birth of his child.

Fast bowler Matt Henry has joined training sessions after recovering from back issues sustained in the first Test and is being assessed ahead of the match.

England Make Leadership Change

England will also feature a change in leadership for the second Test, with Joe Root stepping in as captain after Ben Stokes was left out of the squad.

Stokes was reportedly excluded following a breach of team discipline rules, prompting Root’s return to the captaincy role for the first time since 2022.

Root previously led England in 64 Tests before stepping down to focus on his batting. He said he is approaching the role on a match-by-match basis and is focused on improving team performance.

Root Focused on Fresh Start

Root described his return as unexpected but said he felt in a better place personally and professionally to take on leadership responsibilities again.

He emphasized unity within the squad and said his priority is to help England perform consistently after a challenging run of results in recent Tests.
