Haaland’s Late Double Sends Norway into World Cup Quarter-finals, Brazil Eliminated

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Erling Haaland scored twice in the closing stages as Norway secured a memorable 2-1 victory over Brazil, booking their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in the nation’s history.

Goalkeeper Orjan Nyland was one of the standout performers, making a series of outstanding saves, including a first-half penalty stop from Bruno Guimaraes. His heroics kept Norway in the contest before Haaland delivered the decisive blows late in the match.

Brazil managed to reduce the deficit in stoppage time when Neymar converted a penalty, but it was not enough to prevent the five-time world champions from suffering an early exit.

Haaland’s two goals brought his tournament tally to seven, drawing level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. Norway will now face either Mexico or England in the quarter-finals.

For Brazil, the defeat extends a difficult run in recent World Cups. Despite appointing Carlo Ancelotti in an effort to end their long wait for another world title, the team has once again been eliminated by European opposition.

Brazil Miss Early Opportunities

Norway nearly took the lead within the opening minutes through Patrick Berg, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Brazil were later awarded a penalty after a VAR review confirmed a foul inside the area. Bruno Guimaraes took the spot kick, but Nyland made an excellent diving save to deny the midfielder.

The Norwegian goalkeeper continued his impressive performance by producing several important stops, including efforts from Gabriel Martinelli, Vinicius Junior and Guimaraes.

Before halftime, Norway also came close to scoring when Martin Odegaard tested Alisson Becker after a strong run and clever play from Haaland.

Norway Find Their Breakthrough

Brazil continued to create chances after the interval, but Endrick missed a promising opportunity when he lifted his shot wide after being set up by Vinicius Junior.

Norway eventually broke the deadlock in the closing stages. Andreas Schjelderup delivered a cross from the left, and Haaland rose highest to head the ball into the corner of the net.

As Brazil pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Nyland made another key save to preserve Norway’s advantage.

Haaland then sealed the result with a powerful low finish from the edge of the penalty area in the 90th minute.

Neymar Scores Too Late

Deep into stoppage time, Brazil were awarded a second penalty following a foul on Casemiro. Neymar converted from the spot to make it 2-1, but the final whistle soon followed, confirming Norway’s historic victory.

The result sends Norway into the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time, while Brazil’s campaign comes to an earlier-than-expected end despite creating numerous scoring opportunities.
