Lucas Glover Explains Why He Removed His Shoes During Final Round of 3M Open

Professional golfer Lucas Glover has clarified why he removed his shoes during the final round of the 3M Open, saying the decision was made to avoid leaving marks on the putting greens after concerns were raised about his metal spikes.
The unusual moment drew attention during Sunday’s round at TPC Twin Cities, with some television commentators suggesting it was connected to the AimPoint green-reading method used by several PGA Tour players. Glover later explained that the reason was unrelated.
Glover Addresses the Incident
In a statement shared on social media, Glover said he has worn metal spikes throughout his PGA Tour career and had never previously received a complaint about their impact on the greens.
He explained that after a birdie on the 10th hole, he removed his shoes before walking back onto the green to retrieve his ball from the cup. Once he collected the ball, he left the green and put his shoes back on.
Complaint About Spike Marks
According to Glover, a rules official informed him that concerns had been raised about spike marks on the greens.
He noted that other players in nearby groups were also wearing metal spikes and emphasized that he had not violated any tournament rules.
Glover added that the bentgrass greens at the 3M Open were soft due to course conditions, making them more susceptible to marks regardless of whether players wore metal or soft spikes.
Course Conditions Played a Role
The former U.S. Open champion said he always tries to minimize any impact on the greens by repairing or smoothing areas around the hole before leaving.
He added that under soft playing conditions, some wear on the greens is difficult to avoid, regardless of the type of golf shoes being used.
The incident sparked discussion among golf fans during the tournament, but Glover’s explanation clarified that his actions were intended to protect the course rather than make a statement.
