Manchester United manager Michael Carrick faces another important test this weekend as his team looks to recover from a difficult start to the 2026-27 season.
United will travel to Fulham on Sunday after suffering a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the League Cup. The result came after United had taken a two-goal lead at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur will host Aston Villa on Saturday as both teams look for an improvement after struggling during the opening weeks of the Premier League campaign.
Carrick Under Pressure at Manchester United
Manchester United have collected only one victory from their first four Premier League matches and are currently 13th in the table.
Their latest setback came in the League Cup, where Brighton overturned a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2. The defeat marked the first time in 50 years that United had lost a home match after leading by two goals.
Carrick accepted responsibility for the disappointing second-half performance and now faces another test when United visit Fulham on September 20.
Fulham have also failed to win in the league so far, adding importance to the upcoming fixture for both sides.
Tottenham Still Searching for First League Goal
Tottenham are also experiencing a difficult opening to the season under Roberto De Zerbi.
Spurs have yet to score in the Premier League after four matches and have collected two points. Their goalless draw against Everton extended that unwanted run and represented the first time in the club’s history that they had failed to score in their opening four league games.
Tottenham will face Aston Villa on Saturday, with Villa also struggling for results early in the campaign.
The fixture gives both teams an opportunity to improve their position before the international break.
Arsenal Maintain Perfect Start
At the other end of the table, defending champions Arsenal have made a perfect start to their title defence.
The Gunners have won all four of their Premier League matches and currently lead the standings with 12 points. Their latest league victory came against Sunderland, maintaining their 100% record.
Arsenal are scheduled to visit Brighton on Saturday as they look to continue their strong opening run.
Manchester City Also Unbeaten
Manchester City have also won their opening four league matches under new manager Enzo Maresca.
City defeated Manchester United 1-0 in their most recent Premier League fixture, keeping their perfect record intact and adding to United’s early-season problems.
City will host Sunderland on Sunday, with the match moved from Saturday because of their League Cup commitments.
Weekend Fixtures Set for Key Premier League Tests
The weekend schedule includes several important matches involving teams at opposite ends of the table.
