Pakistan Railways Outsources Five Passenger Trains Under Public-Private Partnership

Pakistan Railways has outsourced the commercial operations of five passenger trains to private-sector partners in agreements valued at approximately Rs. 10.75 billion. The move is aimed at improving revenue generation and enhancing passenger services across key routes.

According to official sources, the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen the financial performance of Pakistan Railways while improving service quality for passengers.

Objective to Improve Revenue and Services

Officials said several of the trains previously generated limited revenue under the existing system. By involving private operators, the department expects improved operational efficiency and higher financial returns.

The arrangement is also intended to upgrade passenger facilities and overall service standards.

Trains Included in the Agreement

Under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the following trains have been outsourced:

  • Awam Express
  • Millat Express
  • Karakoram Express
  • Mianwali Passenger
  • Narowal Passenger

Railway authorities believe that private-sector management will help improve scheduling, maintenance, and onboard services.

Expected Improvements

Officials said the outsourcing is expected to bring:

  • Better train maintenance and cleanliness
  • Improved passenger comfort and facilities
  • More efficient operations and service delivery
  • Increased revenue for Pakistan Railways

Broader Reform Efforts

The decision is part of ongoing reforms within Pakistan Railways aimed at increasing efficiency through public-private collaboration.

Authorities hope the new management structure will strengthen the organization’s financial stability while offering passengers a better travel experience across selected routes.
