NDMA Issues Flood and GLOF Alert for Northern Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert warning of rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and possible hailstorms across several parts of Pakistan from June 16 to June 20.

The alert has been issued by the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), which says a westerly weather system is likely to affect upper and northern regions of the country during this period.

Rain and Storm Forecast for Multiple Regions

According to the advisory, rain and thunderstorm activity is expected in several areas of Punjab, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Jhelum, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Jhang, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan.

Similar weather conditions are also forecast for parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, Balochistan, and upper Sindh.

Flood and GLOF Risk in Northern Areas

Authorities have warned that rainfall combined with rising temperatures may increase the risk of flooding in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir between June 16 and June 19.

The NDMA also cautioned that rapid glacier melting could trigger glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in vulnerable mountainous regions.

High-risk areas identified include Hasanabad, Shisper, Gulkin, Gulmit, Passu, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, and Shigar.

Possible Disruptions in Mountain Regions

The authority further warned that heavy rainfall and potential landslides could disrupt road connectivity in several mountainous areas.

Relevant departments have been placed on high alert, particularly along key highways and sensitive northern routes.

Public Advisory Issued

Tourists and travelers have been advised to check weather and road conditions before planning trips to northern areas.

Provincial and district administrations have also been instructed to remain prepared for any emergency situations and ensure timely response measures where needed.

The NDMA continues to monitor the situation closely as the weather system moves across the country.
