PTA Working to Reduce eSIM Prices by Up to 50% in Pakistan
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is working with mobile network operators to reduce the cost of eSIM activation in an effort to encourage wider adoption of the technology across the country.
According to PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman, discussions are underway with telecom companies to lower the current eSIM fee, which is around Rs. 2,000, to a range of Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,500.
Effort to Encourage eSIM Adoption
The update was shared during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, where the PTA chairman said that reducing the cost of eSIM services could encourage more users to switch to the digital SIM technology.
He added that as demand for eSIMs increases, prices may become even more competitive over time.
PTA Clarifies Role in Mobile Taxes
During the committee meeting, the PTA chairman clarified that the authority is not responsible for imposing taxes on mobile phones. He explained that taxation matters fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
He also informed lawmakers that approximately 25 million mobile phones are manufactured annually in Pakistan, while premium smartphone brands such as Samsung and Apple are primarily imported and remain subject to applicable taxes and duties.
Focus on Future Connectivity
The PTA chairman noted that maintaining affordable access to smartphones will be important for the future expansion of digital services, including the rollout of 5G technology.
He cautioned that higher taxes on mobile devices could slow consumer adoption of advanced mobile technologies by increasing the overall cost of compatible smartphones.
