Punjab Approves Rs. 50 Billion General Hospital Project in Rawalpindi
The Punjab government has approved plans for the construction of the Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif General Hospital in Rawalpindi, a major healthcare project estimated to cost Rs. 50 billion.
According to officials, the proposed hospital will have a capacity of 3,000 beds and will be built on a 36-kanal site located at the former Government Transport Service (GTS) premises on Peshawar Road in Chohar Harpal, Rawalpindi Cantonment. The land, owned by the Punjab Communications Department, has remained largely unused for more than three decades.
Project Planning and Timeline
The project has been forwarded to the Punjab Planning Board for further planning and final approval. Subject to the completion of the approval process, construction is expected to begin during the 2027–28 fiscal year.
Officials said the project will be jointly financed by the federal and Punjab governments after it was previously delayed due to financial and economic constraints.
Planned Medical Facilities
Once completed, the hospital is expected to offer a wide range of healthcare services, including:
- 3,000-bed patient capacity
- 13 operation theaters
- Outpatient Department (OPD)
- Two emergency units
- Maternity and pediatric wards
- Cardiology services
- Kidney care and dialysis facilities
- Eye and ENT departments
- Orthopedic and neurosurgery units
- General medical wards
The project also includes plans for a teaching hospital, nursing hostel, doctors’ hostel, modern laboratories, and advanced medical equipment to support patient care and medical education.
The proposed facility is expected to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Rawalpindi and improve access to specialized medical services for residents of the region.
