Punjab Farmers Raise Concerns Over Wheat Sector Losses, Demand Policy Review
Farmer representatives in Punjab have expressed concerns over financial losses in the wheat sector and warned of possible protests if their demands are not addressed within a few days.
Speaking at a press conference, representatives of Pakistan Kissan Ittehad said that farmers have faced significant losses over the past two years, which they attributed to pricing challenges, policy gaps, and administrative issues.
The group has called for the formation of an independent commission to review developments in the wheat sector over the past several years and assess key policy decisions affecting farmers.
According to the representatives, wheat production costs have increased in recent seasons, while market prices have remained comparatively lower, creating financial pressure on growers. They also raised concerns about procurement processes and delays in wheat purchases by relevant authorities.
The farmers’ body further stated that existing support mechanisms have not been effectively implemented, and called for reforms in agricultural pricing and procurement systems to ensure fair returns for producers.
They also urged authorities to review institutional frameworks related to agricultural regulation and procurement to improve transparency and efficiency in the sector.
The representatives added that if their concerns are not addressed within the stated timeframe, they may consider launching protest actions to press for their demands.
Government officials have not yet issued a detailed response to the latest statement, while discussions on wheat procurement and pricing policies are expected to continue at the policy level.
