Punjab Plans Transition to Electric Buses for Public Transport
LAHORE — The Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA) has announced plans to gradually replace fuel-powered buses with electric buses as part of efforts to modernize public transportation and promote environmentally sustainable travel.
According to officials, the initiative aims to reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, and provide commuters with cleaner and more modern transport services across the province.
Pre-Qualification Process to Begin in July
PMTA has invited applications from interested companies and firms for the project. The pre-qualification process is scheduled to begin on 16 July.
Under the eligibility criteria, applicants must have prior experience in supplying 12-meter fully electric buses. Companies will also be required to demonstrate expertise in providing spare parts, maintenance support, and repair services for electric vehicle fleets.
Charging Infrastructure and Training
Selected firms will be responsible for installing and commissioning charging stations required for the operation of the electric buses. They will also assist with driver training and other operational arrangements to ensure smooth implementation of the new transport system.
Focus on Sustainable Transport
Officials said the project is part of broader efforts to develop an environmentally friendly public transportation network and support cleaner urban mobility.
The transition to electric buses is expected to contribute to reduced emissions, improved air quality, and a more sustainable public transport system for residents across Punjab.
