Punjab to Upgrade 177 Unmanned Railway Crossings for Improved Safety

The Punjab government has announced plans to convert 177 unmanned railway level crossings across the province into manned crossings as part of a major public safety initiative.

Officials said an initial Rs. 9.7 billion has been allocated for the project, which aims to improve road safety and reduce accidents at railway crossings.

Railway Safety Initiative

The decision was discussed during a meeting between Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi and Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb at the Railways Headquarters.

The meeting reviewed ongoing cooperation between the Punjab government and Pakistan Railways following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed earlier this year.

Under the plan, trained personnel will be deployed at all 177 crossings to monitor train movement and assist road users, helping improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

Plans for New Train Services

Officials also reviewed progress on a proposal to introduce Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) train services on eight local railway routes across Punjab.

Survey work for the project has already begun, while an MoU outlining the implementation plan is currently being prepared.

Railway Corridor Beautification

In addition to transport improvements, the Punjab government plans to enhance the areas surrounding railway infrastructure.

As part of the initiative, funds have been allocated to develop 40 public parks along the Shahdara–Raiwind railway corridor, with the goal of improving the urban environment and public spaces.

The government says these projects are intended to strengthen railway infrastructure, improve passenger services, and enhance public safety across the province.
