Rawalpindi Administration Issues Flood Alert Ahead of Heavy Monsoon Rains
The Rawalpindi district administration has issued a flood alert through July 6 following forecasts of heavy monsoon rainfall and the possibility of urban flooding in the city.
Authorities have directed all relevant departments, civic agencies, and emergency services to remain on high alert and strengthen preparedness measures to reduce the impact of possible flooding.
The instructions were issued during a meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema. Representatives from Rescue 1122, the health department, WASA, the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA), the Municipal Corporation, Civil Defence, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), police, and other departments attended the meeting.
Officials from the Meteorological Department briefed participants on the expected monsoon weather conditions and the likelihood of heavy rainfall across the district in the coming days.
Authorities Increase Preparedness
The deputy commissioner warned that heavy rains could lead to urban flooding, increased water flow in storm drains, and landslides in vulnerable areas.
He instructed all departments to closely monitor weather updates, keep emergency response systems fully operational, and complete all necessary preparations before severe weather develops.
The meeting also reviewed the district’s monsoon emergency plan, including drainage arrangements, cleaning of storm drains, availability of emergency equipment, rescue resources, and monitoring of sensitive locations.
Focus on Public Safety
The district administration has directed officials to maintain continuous surveillance of low-lying areas, storm drains, bridges, and other flood-prone locations. Authorities have also been instructed to improve drainage operations and ensure rapid response to any emergency.
Assistant commissioners have been asked to inspect monsoon preparedness in their respective areas on a daily basis, while emergency control rooms will remain fully operational throughout the alert period.
Officials have also been directed to ensure that machinery, rescue equipment, and emergency personnel remain available around the clock to respond quickly to public complaints and weather-related incidents.
The district administration emphasized that protecting the lives and property of residents remains its top priority during the ongoing monsoon season and warned that any negligence in emergency preparedness would not be tolerated.
