Senate Approves Bill Making Coding and Computer Science Mandatory in Schools

Pakistan’s Senate has passed the Free and Compulsory Education Amendment Bill 2026, making computer science and coding compulsory subjects in schools from elementary to high school level.

The legislation was approved during a Senate session chaired by Senator Sherry Rehman and is aimed at improving digital literacy and preparing students for technology-driven careers.

Focus on digital education

Under the amendment to the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2012, programming and computer education will now become a required part of the national curriculum.

Lawmakers said the move is intended to modernize Pakistan’s education system and equip students with skills needed in the global digital economy.

Preparing students for future careers

Senators supporting the bill highlighted the growing importance of technology, software development, and digital skills in modern job markets. They said introducing coding and computer science at school level could help students build technical knowledge from an early age.

The amendment came into effect immediately after Senate approval.

Other matters discussed in Senate

During the same session, lawmakers also passed the Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council bill following a tied vote.

The Senate was additionally informed about employment statistics, university administration matters, and developments related to higher education institutions across the country.

Officials also shared updates regarding infrastructure revenue collection and administrative reforms in public universities.

Growing emphasis on technology in education

The approval of the education amendment reflects Pakistan’s increasing focus on digital transformation and technology-based learning. Experts believe the inclusion of coding and computer science in schools could help strengthen future workforce skills and improve opportunities for students in emerging industries.
