WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Group Lima Preview: Japan Leads Race for Finals 2027 Berths

The WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Group Lima is set to deliver exciting competition as six national teams battle for two qualification spots in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Finals 2027 in Redcliffe, Australia.

Defending world champions Japan women’s national softball team, along with Puerto Rico women’s national softball team, Great Britain women’s national softball team, Philippines women’s national softball team, Venezuela women’s national softball team, and hosts Peru women’s national softball team will compete in Lima from July 14 to 18.

The tournament will feature a five-game round-robin stage before the top four teams advance to the playoffs. The two finalists will earn places at the 2027 World Cup Finals, where teams will also compete for qualification to the LA28 Olympic Games softball tournament.

Japan Enter as Defending Champions

World No. 1 Japan arrive in Lima as the team to beat after winning their fourth Women’s Softball World Cup title in 2024.

The Japanese squad includes experienced stars such as Yukiko Ueno and Miu Goto, both expected to play key roles during the tournament.

Japan has captured 13 World Cup medals and will be aiming to successfully defend its status as the world’s top-ranked softball nation.

Puerto Rico Targets Another Finals Appearance

Ranked No. 3 in the world, Puerto Rico enters the competition as one of the strongest contenders for qualification.

Led by experienced players including Karla Claudio, Aleshia Ocasio, and Taran Alvelo, the team combines youth and experience as it seeks another appearance in the World Cup Finals.

Great Britain Chasing Historic Qualification

Great Britain will look to build on its best-ever World Cup finish after placing ninth in the previous tournament.

The team will once again rely on star pitcher Georgina Corrick as it aims to secure its first-ever berth in the Women’s Softball World Cup Finals.

Philippines Continue Their Rise

The Philippines have made significant progress in recent years, climbing steadily in the world rankings.

After impressive performances in recent international competitions, the team will hope to return to the World Cup Finals and continue its upward trajectory in global softball.

Venezuela Looking to Return Among Top Teams

Venezuela enters the tournament determined to improve on its previous World Cup campaign.

Coached by former Olympians Maria Soto and Denisse Fuenmayor, the South American side will look to challenge for one of the available qualification spots.

Peru Ready to Shine on Home Soil

Host nation Peru will make just its second Women’s Softball World Cup appearance.

Backed by home supporters, the young squad hopes to gain valuable international experience while showcasing the growth of softball in the country. Pitcher Maria Pizarro is expected to be one of the team’s key performers.

Qualification at Stake

With only two places available for the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Finals 2027, every game in Group Lima will be crucial.

While Japan and Puerto Rico begin as favorites, Great Britain, the Philippines, Venezuela, and host Peru all have opportunities to challenge for qualification, setting the stage for a highly competitive tournament in Lima.
