23 Killed, Over 100 Injured in Sri Lanka Prison Riot

At least 23 people were killed and more than 100 others injured after violent clashes broke out inside Negombo Prison in Sri Lanka, making it one of the country’s deadliest prison incidents in recent years.

According to local authorities, the violence began overnight following clashes between rival inmate groups. The unrest later escalated, resulting in multiple casualties among prisoners and prison staff.

Casualties and Injuries

Officials confirmed that those killed include six prison guards, while more than 100 inmates and security personnel sustained injuries of varying severity.

Hospital authorities said many of the injured suffered gunshot wounds, cuts, and other serious injuries. Several critically wounded victims were transferred to a major hospital in Colombo for specialized treatment.

Authorities Respond to the Violence

Sri Lanka’s Justice Minister expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a tragedy that should never have occurred. He said authorities are working to restore order and separate rival inmate groups to prevent further violence.

Prison officials stated that the disturbance began on Sunday evening and intensified the following morning when some inmates allegedly attempted to escape. Security personnel managed to prevent the escape, while additional police and military units were deployed around the prison to secure the area.

Security Tightened Around Prison

Following the incident, several inmates were transferred to other correctional facilities as part of efforts to restore normal operations.

Large numbers of concerned family members gathered outside the prison, while security agencies increased surveillance in the surrounding area.

Overcrowding Remains a Challenge

The latest incident has once again highlighted concerns over overcrowding in Sri Lanka’s prison system.
