5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Islamabad, Peshawar and Parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
A moderate earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan on Saturday, with tremors felt across several parts of Pakistan, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.
The earthquake’s impact was felt in major cities including Islamabad and Peshawar, as well as several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa such as Swat, Chitral, Hangu, and North Waziristan. Residents in Rawalpindi also reported shaking.
Seismological officials stated that the quake originated at a depth of approximately 199 kilometres, with its epicentre located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.
No immediate reports of casualties or structural damage have been confirmed.
Pakistan lies in a seismically active zone due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making earthquakes relatively common in the region. Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and advise public awareness and preparedness.
