Dar says Gen Faiz Hameed apologised to him for ‘excesses’

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar recently disclosed that former spymaster Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, who is currently undergoing court martial proceedings, had apologized to him for subjecting him to unfair treatment.

Mr. Dar, referring to the arrest of the former ISI chief as a significant event, mentioned, “I am among the victims of Faiz Hameed.” However, he added that the retired general had expressed regret for his actions.

The details of the alleged mistreatment by the ex-spymaster were not elaborated upon by Mr. Dar.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Gen Faiz and three other retired officers were detained for allegedly mistreating the owner of a private housing society in the federal capital.

Regarding Gen Faiz’s arrest, Mr. Dar stated that such an event was unprecedented in the country’s history, marking the conclusion of a situation that began in 2011.

In his statement, Mr. Dar, who also serves as the foreign minister, commented that the PTI sit-in in 2014 had a negative impact on the country’s economy despite its failure.

In July 2017, the Supreme Court disqualified both Mr. Dar and Nawaz Sharif from public office following the release of the Panama Papers.

In September 2017, Mr. Dar was indicted by a NAB court in the Panama Papers corruption case for possessing wealth beyond his known sources of income. However, in October that year, he left for the United Kingdom for medical treatment after falling ill while in Saudi Arabia.

By December 2017, an accountability court declared Mr. Dar a proclaimed offender after he repeatedly failed to appear before the court.

Following a change in government, Mr. Dar was appointed as the finance minister in September 2022. In April this year, he was given the additional role of deputy prime minister.

Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan informed the media that Gen Faiz’s arrest was an internal matter of the army and should not be interfered with. He also noted that after the retirement of the former ISI chief, the PTI had no further contact with him.
