Punjab to Destroy Rawaz Bridge to Protect 2 Major Cities in South

Punjab Takes Measures to Protect Cities Amid Flooding
August 29, 2025

Authorities in Punjab have taken decisive action to protect the cities of Jhang and Chiniot as floodwaters continue to impact the region. Officials announced that the Rawaz Bridge would be deliberately breached to help divert the Chenab River away from densely populated areas.

At Trimu Barrage, water flow was recorded at 120,000 cusecs, with further surges expected later in the day. In response, the administration has also ordered evacuations along river belts in Nankana, Sheikhupura, and Toba Tek Singh, while deploying additional staff to assist in relief efforts.

Flood Impact Across Punjab
The recent floods have affected more than 1.4 million people in Punjab, resulting in the evacuation of 265,000 residents. At least 17 lives have been lost, and thousands of homes and acres of crops—including cotton, rice, and maize—have been damaged or destroyed.

In Chiniot, a flood wave carrying 817,000 cusecs of water inundated low-lying areas along the Chenab River. Meanwhile, in Qabula, the Sutlej River overflowed, affecting villages in Arifwala. Near Lahore, the Ravi River’s water level decreased slightly to 220,000 cusecs, providing some relief after widespread evacuations.

Challenges for Affected Residents
Many residents in the flood-affected areas are facing difficulties returning to their homes due to damage and ongoing waterlogging. Relief teams continue to support displaced families, providing shelter and essential aid.

Climate and Regional Context
Since June, monsoon rains and landslides across Pakistan have caused over 800 fatalities. Experts highlight that changing climate patterns are contributing to more erratic and intense rainfall. Authorities also noted that water releases from dams in India have added to the pressure on Punjab’s rivers.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged residents to follow safety advisories.
