Pakistan Plans Ultra-Fast EV Charging Stations on Motorways and Highways
The federal government is considering a major expansion of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure across Pakistan, including the installation of ultra-fast charging stations along motorways and national highways.
According to proposed plans, around 40 Level 3 fast-charging stations could be installed on motorways and the N-5 Highway at average intervals of 120 kilometers to support long-distance EV travel.
Officials say Level 3 chargers are capable of charging electric vehicles in approximately 40 minutes to one hour, helping reduce range anxiety for EV users.
The broader proposal includes:
- 1,050 Level 3 fast chargers
- 750 Level 2 charging stations
- 600 Level 1 charging points
- 600 battery-swapping stations nationwide
The government is also aiming to establish around 3,000 EV charging stations across Pakistan by 2030 as part of its long-term electric mobility strategy.
To support the project, authorities plan to provide Rs. 2.25 billion through a public-private partnership model for locations where commercial investment may be difficult.
The proposed policy also includes participation from fuel companies. Under the plan, at least 10 percent of fuel stations operated by oil marketing companies in each province may be required to install Level 3 fast chargers.
If approved, the first phase of implementation is expected to begin within six months.
Officials have also proposed an EV charging tariff of Rs. 39.7 per kilowatt-hour to help make charging operations commercially sustainable.
The initiative is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s EV infrastructure and support the country’s growing focus on cleaner and more energy-efficient transportation solutions.
