Pakistan Seeks Emergency LNG Cargo Following Supply Disruption

Pakistan has moved to secure an emergency shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) after a disruption in scheduled supplies from Qatar, as authorities work to maintain stable energy availability across the country.

According to industry sources, state-owned Pakistan LNG Limited has issued an emergency tender to purchase an LNG cargo for delivery in mid-July. The decision follows the postponement of a previously expected LNG shipment from Qatar.

The supply disruption comes amid increased security concerns affecting maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy shipping routes. Reports indicate that heightened regional tensions have affected the movement of some LNG vessels, leading to delays in deliveries.

Pakistan depends heavily on LNG imports to meet domestic energy demand, with a significant portion of its long-term supplies coming from Qatar. Any interruption in scheduled shipments can create challenges for the country’s gas supply system.

To help address the temporary shortfall, the government has approved the procurement of additional LNG cargoes from the international spot market. While spot purchases generally cost more than long-term contracted supplies, they provide flexibility during periods of supply disruption.

Market analysts note that LNG imports into Pakistan have fluctuated in recent months as global energy markets continue to respond to geopolitical developments and shipping conditions.
