New Zealand and India Announce Strategic Partnership Covering Defence, Trade and Regional Cooperation

New Zealand and India have announced a new strategic partnership aimed at strengthening cooperation in defence, security, trade and other key sectors during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Auckland.

The agreement marks a significant step in bilateral relations and is the first visit by an Indian prime minister to New Zealand in four decades.

Leaders Hold High-Level Talks

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon welcomed Prime Minister Modi with an official ceremony before both leaders held discussions on expanding cooperation between the two countries.

Following the meeting, the two governments announced a strategic partnership covering a wide range of areas, including defence, diplomacy, economic cooperation, science, culture and sports.

Prime Minister Modi described the agreement as an important milestone in relations between the two countries and highlighted their shared commitment to democratic values.

Defence and Indo-Pacific Cooperation

According to a joint statement, the partnership includes plans to strengthen defence cooperation through increased dialogue, military exchanges and naval collaboration.

Both countries also reaffirmed their support for a free, open, peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific, emphasizing the importance of regional stability and international cooperation.

Expanding Trade and Economic Relations

The partnership builds on a recently signed free trade agreement that aims to increase bilateral trade and investment opportunities.

Officials from both governments said they hope stronger economic ties will create new opportunities for businesses, improve market access and encourage cooperation in emerging sectors.

Community Events During the Visit

Prime Minister Modi also attended a large community gathering in Auckland, where members of the Indian diaspora welcomed the visiting delegation.

Meanwhile, a small demonstration was held outside the venue. Local authorities maintained security and ensured public order during the event.

Looking Ahead

The new strategic partnership reflects the growing relationship between New Zealand and India as both countries seek closer cooperation across multiple sectors.

Officials from both sides are expected to continue discussions on implementing the agreement and expanding collaboration in defence, trade, education, technology and regional development.
