A City with Deep Baseball Roots
Rockford has played an important role in American baseball history for more than 150 years.
The city’s Forest City Baseball Club became one of the first professional baseball teams in the United States, joining the National Association in 1871, the country’s first professional baseball league.
Rockford was also home to early baseball stars, including Albert Spalding, who later co-founded the internationally recognized sporting goods company bearing his name.
Home of the Rockford Peaches
Rockford is perhaps best known as the home of the legendary Rockford Peaches, one of the most successful teams in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL).
Established in 1943, the league helped keep professional baseball in the public spotlight during World War II when many male players were serving in the military.
The Rockford Peaches won four league championships—more than any other team in the league’s history—and played all of their home games at Beyer Stadium.
Continuing the Legacy of Women’s Baseball
Local officials say hosting the Women’s Baseball World Cup represents an opportunity to celebrate Rockford’s long-standing connection to women’s baseball while inspiring future generations of players.
The event is being supported through collaboration between community organizations, sports institutions, and local government agencies working to promote the growth of women’s baseball.
Beyer Stadium Reopens
Ahead of the tournament, the city is celebrating the reopening of the historic Beyer Stadium, now officially known as Beyer Stadium at Maybelle Blair Park.
The venue has been renamed in honor of Maybelle Blair, a former professional player and longtime advocate for women’s baseball, recognizing her contributions to the sport and its continued development.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming World Cup will bring elite international women’s baseball back to one of the sport’s most historic locations, while highlighting the continued growth of women’s baseball around the world.
Officials hope the tournament will further strengthen interest in the sport and build on Rockford’s rich baseball heritage as it prepares to host the World Cup Finals in 2027.
