Dutch Students Introduce Solar-Powered Ambulance Prototype
A team of students from the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands has unveiled Stella Juva, a solar-powered ambulance prototype designed to improve access to healthcare in remote and underserved areas.
The project aims to demonstrate how renewable energy can support mobile healthcare services, particularly in locations where access to medical facilities is limited.
Powered by Solar Energy
The prototype features solar panels installed on its roof, which help power the vehicle as well as onboard medical equipment.
According to the development team, the ambulance is equipped with a rechargeable battery that stores solar energy, allowing it to continue operating during cloudy weather or at night.
The vehicle has a reported top speed of 120 kilometres per hour and is designed to travel on both paved roads and challenging off-road terrain.
Designed as a Mobile Healthcare Unit
Instead of transporting patients to hospitals, Stella Juva is intended to bring essential healthcare services directly to communities.
The prototype includes space for medical equipment such as:
- Portable X-ray equipment
- Defibrillator
- Tuberculosis testing kits
- Vaccine storage with temperature control
- Ultrasound equipment for maternal healthcare
The project team says this approach could help improve access to basic medical services in rural and remote regions.
Field Testing Planned
Project leader Mathijs van Gerven, a biomedical engineering student, said the team plans to test the ambulance in Kenya as part of efforts to evaluate its performance in real-world conditions.
Supporting Healthcare Access
Representatives from Amref Health Africa, an organization working to improve healthcare across Africa, noted that long travel distances between villages and healthcare facilities remain a major challenge in many regions.
The student team hopes the solar-powered ambulance concept will contribute to discussions on sustainable healthcare solutions and inspire further innovation in clean-energy transportation for medical services.
