Govt Given 72-Hour Deadline to Prevent Nationwide Fuel Strike
Pakistan’s oil tanker owners and contractors have given the federal government a 72-hour deadline to address their demands, warning that they may launch a nationwide wheel-jam strike if no agreement is reached.
During a joint press conference in Karachi, representatives of tanker associations said the proposed protest could disrupt fuel transportation across the country if negotiations fail. They stated that the matter falls under the responsibility of the Petroleum Division and the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA).
Key Demands of Oil Tanker Owners
The associations have called for several measures, including:
- An increase in freight and transportation rates.
- A review of the White Oil Pipeline’s transportation quota.
- An end to commercial loading through the pipeline.
Association representatives said transportation costs have increased significantly over the past few years, while freight charges have remained unchanged. They urged the government to revise rates to reflect higher operating expenses, including motorway and highway tolls.
Concerns Over White Oil Pipeline
The tanker owners also expressed concerns that a larger share of petroleum products is being transported through the White Oil Pipeline than originally planned.
According to the associations, this has reduced the number of trips available for tanker operators, affecting their businesses and overall earnings.
Fuel Station Strike Continues in KP
Meanwhile, a separate protest by petroleum dealers continues in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where many fuel stations have suspended operations.
The strike has affected several districts, including:
- Lower Dir
- Upper Dir
- Chitral
- Bajaur
- Swat
- Malakand
- Shangla
- Buner
The disruption has led to fuel shortages in some areas, creating difficulties for motorists and public transport.
Dealers’ Demands
Petroleum dealers are also seeking:
- A review of the daily fuel pricing system.
- An increase in dealers’ profit margins, which they say have remained unchanged for several years.
Association leaders say the protest will continue until meaningful discussions are held with the government and their concerns are addressed.
