The Punjab government has approved Rs400 million for the renovation and modernisation of Lahore’s National Hockey Stadium and its adjoining practice pitch, in a move aimed at improving hockey facilities in Pakistan.
The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) confirmed that the funding was approved by the provincial government and Sports Board Punjab following a special request from the federation.
The project will focus on upgrading the playing surface, repairing stadium infrastructure and improving training facilities to provide players with better conditions for practice and competition.
New Astroturf and Improved Training Facilities
A key part of the renovation plan is the installation of new Astroturf to bring the stadium’s playing facilities closer to international standards.
The project will also include repairs and upgrades to the venue’s infrastructure and other facilities. Training areas are expected to benefit from improvements designed to support players’ preparation and development.
According to the PHF, the renovation work is expected to be completed by January 2027.
The federation said the initiative is intended to strengthen hockey in the country by providing athletes with improved facilities and a better training environment.
National Hockey Stadium’s Historic Role
Lahore’s National Hockey Stadium is one of Pakistan’s most prominent hockey venues and has hosted several major international competitions over the years.
The stadium staged the Men’s Hockey World Cup in 1990 and hosted the Champions Trophy in 1978, 1988, 1994, 1998 and 2004.
The venue also hosted a two-match series between Pakistan and the World XI in January 2018.
The planned renovation is expected to improve the stadium’s playing and training facilities while helping preserve its position as an important centre for hockey in Pakistan.
With the project scheduled for completion in early 2027, the upgrade could provide local players with better facilities and support efforts to develop the sport at the national level.
