Cloudbursts and Flash Flooding Cause Widespread Damage in Gilgit-Baltistan
Severe flash floods triggered by cloudbursts and rapid glacier melting have caused significant damage in several areas of Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district, affecting local communities and infrastructure.
The affected regions include Darel, Khanbari, Buttogah, Khannar, Hodur, Niat, and Thor, where floodwaters have damaged homes, agricultural land, and standing crops. Orchards and fertile farmland have also been severely impacted, creating difficulties for local residents who depend on agriculture for their livelihood.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Disrupted
According to local reports, the flooding has damaged key infrastructure, including bridges, water channels, rural roads, and small-scale milling facilities. Landslides caused by heavy rainfall have further disrupted connectivity, blocking sections of the Karakoram Highway and limiting access to remote areas.
As a result, several villages have been temporarily isolated.
Rising Water Levels and Safety Concerns
Officials have noted that rising temperatures are contributing to accelerated glacier melting, which is increasing water flow in rivers and heightening the risk of flooding in nearby settlements.
Communities living along riverbanks are considered at higher risk as water levels continue to rise in some areas.
Relief Efforts Urged
Local residents have called on authorities and disaster management agencies to provide urgent relief assistance. These include restoration of access routes, supply of food and shelter, and support for displaced families.
Efforts are expected to focus on emergency response and rehabilitation in the affected regions as conditions continue to be monitored.
