KP Hosts First-Ever Dragon Boat Festival on Kabul River

PESHAWAR – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa successfully hosted Pakistan’s first-ever Dragon Boat Festival on the historic Kabul River, bringing together sports enthusiasts, families, and cultural organizations for a unique celebration of friendship, culture, and tourism.

The exciting dragon boat competition featured more than 100 participants from various teams. A joint team representing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police and Charsadda secured first place after a competitive final race. The Sports Writers Association finished as runners-up, while the Peshawar High Court team claimed third position.

The festival was jointly organized by China Window Peshawar and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority (KPCTA) to strengthen cultural ties and promote tourism in the province.

For the first time, the Kabul River became the center of a vibrant cultural event inspired by the traditional Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. Colorful dragon boats, rhythmic drum performances, and cultural activities created an engaging atmosphere for visitors.

The event also featured traditional Khattak dance performances and a band display by the Federal Constabulary, showcasing Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage alongside Chinese traditions.

Thousands of spectators, including families, students, and tourists, gathered along the riverbanks to witness the races and enjoy the festivities.

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Culture and Tourism, Malik Adeel Iqbal, attended the event as the chief guest and distributed prizes among the winning teams. He said the festival highlighted the positive image of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and reflected the strong friendship between Pakistan and China.

Organizers described the event as a milestone in cultural cooperation and announced plans to make the Dragon Boat Festival an annual attraction in the province.

The initiative is expected to support tourism development, encourage cultural exchange, and provide new recreational opportunities for local communities and visitors alike.
