Lionel Messi Sets New FIFA World Cup Goal Record as Argentina Beat Austria

ARLINGTON, Texas — Argentina captain Lionel Messi added another milestone to his remarkable career by becoming the highest goal scorer in FIFA World Cup history during Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria on Monday.

The 38-year-old forward scored both goals in the match, taking his World Cup tally to 18 goals and moving ahead of former Germany striker Miroslav Klose’s previous record of 16 goals.

Messi’s first goal came in the 38th minute after he had earlier missed a penalty. The victory strengthened Argentina’s position in the tournament and highlighted another impressive performance from the veteran forward.

With the brace, Messi also extended his scoring streak to six consecutive World Cup matches, joining an exclusive group of players to achieve the feat.

Speaking after the match, Messi emphasized the importance of the team’s victory.

“I’m very happy for the win,” he said. “It was a tough and difficult match. Every game in this World Cup is highly competitive, and we’re enjoying this moment together as a team.”

Later on Monday, France forward Kylian Mbappé scored twice in a 3-0 win over Iraq, bringing his World Cup goal tally to 16 and matching Klose’s former record.

Messi, who is playing in his sixth World Cup, continues to add to his legacy as one of football’s most accomplished players while helping Argentina pursue further success in the tournament.
