Messi Shines on Return as Somali Referee Says World Cup Dream Over
Lionel Messi marked his return to action with a strong performance as Argentina completed their final warm-up match ahead of the World Cup, while controversy continued off the field over visa denials involving a Somali referee.
Messi, 38, came off the bench in the second half after recovering from a hamstring injury and quickly made an impact. His key involvement led to a penalty, which he converted, helping Argentina secure a comfortable victory in their final preparatory match.
The World Cup, set to begin on Thursday across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will see Argentina enter as one of the title favourites as they begin their campaign later this month.
Messi Returns to Boost Argentina
The Argentine captain had missed several recent matches due to injury concerns but showed sharp form in his brief appearance. His return has eased worries about his fitness ahead of the tournament.
Coach Lionel Scaloni used the friendly to test several squad combinations, resting key players at the start before introducing senior names later in the match.
Visa Controversy Surrounds Referee
Away from the pitch, Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan said his World Cup dream had been ended after he was denied entry to the United States.
He stated that he was detained and later sent back despite carrying what he described as valid travel documents. U.S. officials reportedly cited security concerns as the reason for the decision.
The referee, who was previously recognized among Africa’s top officials, had been expected to become the first Somali to officiate at a World Cup.
Security and Political Tensions Continue
The tournament build-up has also seen wider concerns, including visa issues for some officials, ticketing debates, and security arrangements across host countries.
Authorities in Mexico have increased security ahead of the opening match amid separate public demonstrations in Mexico City, though officials say the tournament schedule remains unaffected.
World Cup Set to Begin
Despite off-field challenges, preparations continue across venues in North America as teams finalize their squads and travel plans for the opening matches of the expanded tournament format.
