Pakistan Men’s Football Team to Make Historic FIFA Event Debut at ASEAN Cup

LAHORE: Pakistan’s men’s national football team is set to make history by participating in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, marking the team’s first appearance in a FIFA-sanctioned men’s international tournament.
The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) officially confirmed the development on Tuesday, announcing that Pakistan will be among the 14 participating teams in the competition, which is scheduled to take place during the FIFA international window in September and October.
Historic Opportunity for Pakistan Football
Pakistan has been invited to compete in the tournament alongside several leading football nations from Southeast Asia.
The main FIFA ASEAN Cup, to be hosted by Indonesia, will feature Pakistan along with Malaysia, India, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and other participating teams. Pakistan is one of the invited nations competing in the tournament.
PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani welcomed the opportunity and thanked FIFA for including Pakistan in the competition.
He said the tournament represents an important milestone for Pakistan football and will provide the national team with valuable international experience against strong opposition.
Valuable International Exposure
According to the PFF, participation in the FIFA ASEAN Cup reflects the federation’s commitment to providing the national team with more competitive international matches.
Officials believe the tournament will help players gain experience, improve performance, and support the long-term development of football in Pakistan.
Tournament Format
The FIFA ASEAN Cup will feature two separate competitions.
The main tournament will be played in Indonesia, while the FIFA ASEAN Challenge Cup will include additional participating teams from the region.
Teams will be divided into groups based on the latest international rankings to maintain competitive balance. The group stage will follow a single round-robin format, with the top teams advancing to the final and runners-up competing in the third-place playoff.
FIFA’s Goal for the Competition
According to FIFA, the new tournament has been introduced to provide national teams with more meaningful international competition while strengthening football development and cooperation across the region.
The Pakistan Football Federation said participation in the event is another important step in expanding Pakistan’s presence in international football and creating more opportunities for the national team to compete on the global stage.
