Pakistan, Tajikistan Set Three-Year Trade Growth Roadmap

Pakistan and Tajikistan have agreed on a three-year roadmap aimed at increasing bilateral trade to $200 million while expanding cooperation across key sectors, including energy, agriculture, information technology, health, education, and investment.

The agreement was reached during the 8th Session of the Joint Commission on Trade, Economic and Scientific-Technical Cooperation held in Dushanbe. The meeting was co-chaired by Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, and Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Jum’a Daler Shofaqir.

Both countries agreed to strengthen commercial ties through regular exchange of trade information, participation in trade exhibitions, business forums, and greater engagement between private-sector organizations. Plans were also discussed for trade delegations, business-to-business meetings, and virtual networking opportunities to support commercial partnerships.

A major outcome of the meeting was the commitment to work toward increasing bilateral trade volume to $200 million over the next three years. The initiative will focus on improving market access, enhancing trade transparency, and identifying priority sectors for cooperation.

The two sides welcomed progress on several bilateral agreements, including collaboration between trade promotion organizations. Discussions on a preferential trade arrangement also continued, with both countries expressing interest in accelerating the process.

Energy remained a key area of cooperation, with officials reviewing developments related to the CASA-1000 electricity transmission project and emphasizing the importance of its timely completion. Both sides also agreed to continue technical and commercial discussions through future working group meetings.

Tajikistan expressed interest in exploring investment opportunities with Pakistani energy companies and expanding cooperation in oil and gas development. Technical training and knowledge-sharing programs for professionals in the energy sector were also discussed.

In the industrial sector, both countries explored opportunities for joint ventures in pharmaceuticals, footwear, chemicals, light manufacturing, and related industries. Pakistan also offered training opportunities in digital marketing, e-commerce, freelancing, and content creation to support skills development.

Agricultural cooperation will include information sharing on crop production, trade in seasonal products, and collaboration on high-yield crop varieties. Both sides agreed to finalize a broader agriculture cooperation roadmap for 2026–2028.

The health sector discussions focused on pharmaceutical cooperation, medical training, and potential collaboration in healthcare manufacturing. Education and research partnerships were also highlighted, particularly in engineering, technology, agriculture, hydropower, and environmental sciences.

The meeting additionally emphasized tourism, cultural exchanges, youth engagement, and sports cooperation, with both countries recognizing the potential of regional tourism and heritage promotion.

At the conclusion of the session, Pakistan and Tajikistan reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening long-term economic and strategic cooperation while building new opportunities for trade and investment.
