Punjab CM Orders Province-Wide Safety Audit of School Buildings
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities to carry out an immediate safety audit of school buildings located in densely populated areas across the province.
The directive aims to ensure that educational institutions meet structural safety standards and provide a secure environment for students and staff.
Inspection of School Buildings Ordered
According to official instructions, the relevant departments have been asked to inspect school buildings for potential structural risks and verify compliance with approved construction and safety regulations.
The chief minister also ordered authorities to submit a comprehensive report on the condition of school buildings across Punjab.
Action Against Negligence
Maryam Nawaz instructed officials to take strict legal action against anyone found responsible for negligence, unsafe construction practices, or violations of building standards.
The provincial government said the inspections are intended to help identify risks and prevent future accidents.
Directive Follows Lahore School Incident
The decision comes after a tragic roof collapse at a private educational institution in Lahore’s Baghbanpura area, where an under-construction portion of a building reportedly collapsed during a summer camp.
According to Rescue 1122, construction work was underway on the upper floor of the building when part of the structure gave way, resulting in the death of an eight-year-old child and injuries to several others.
Emergency responders rescued more than 10 children from the debris during the operation.
Support for Affected Families
The chief minister expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young student and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
She also directed the Lahore Commissioner and the Director General of Rescue 1122 to submit detailed reports on the incident while instructing health authorities to ensure the injured children receive the best possible medical care.
