Rare Solar Event: Sun to Align Directly Above Kaaba on Day of Arafat

A rare astronomical phenomenon is expected to occur in Makkah this year, when the sun will align directly above the Kaaba on the Day of Arafat, creating a moment where shadows briefly disappear in the holy city.

According to astronomers, the event is expected to take place at around noon on May 27, 2026, corresponding with the 9th of Dhul Hijjah 1447H.

What Will Happen During the Alignment?

During this rare alignment, the sun will be positioned directly overhead in Makkah, causing vertical objects to cast almost no shadow for a short period.

Experts explain that this happens due to Makkah’s geographical location near latitude 21.4° north, where the sun’s position aligns twice a year during its movement between the equator and the Tropic of Cancer.

Rare Timing With Day of Arafat

What makes this year’s event especially notable is its coincidence with the Day of Arafat, one of the most significant days in the Islamic calendar during Hajj.

Astronomers say this overlap is rare and was last observed in 1993, occurring roughly once every 33 years due to differences between the lunar Hijri calendar and the solar Gregorian calendar.

Scientific Explanation

Meteorological authorities have confirmed that this is a normal and recurring natural phenomenon, not something unusual or extreme in terms of weather impact.

Officials also clarified that such alignment does not necessarily lead to extreme heat, as temperature is influenced by multiple factors including humidity, wind, and cloud cover.

Public Advisory

Experts have urged the public to rely on verified scientific and meteorological sources for accurate information regarding weather and astronomical events.
