LOS ANGELES: Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani will miss next week’s MLB All-Star Game after undergoing a medical procedure to relieve ongoing irritation in his left knee.
According to the Dodgers, Ohtani is scheduled to have fluid drained from his left knee on Sunday following the team’s three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Ohtani Continues as Designated Hitter
Despite the knee issue, Ohtani is expected to continue playing as the team’s designated hitter during the current series.
He had originally been scheduled to start on the mound but was instead used only as a batter after the Dodgers adjusted their pitching plans to avoid placing additional stress on his knee.
Ohtani made an immediate impact by hitting a 381-foot leadoff home run, although the Dodgers were defeated 9-3.
Focus on Returning to the Pitching Rotation
Speaking after the game, Ohtani said his priority is to recover fully and return to his regular pitching schedule.
He explained that while he may have been able to pitch, taking additional time to recover during the upcoming All-Star break would provide a better opportunity for long-term fitness.
Managing the Injury
The Japanese two-way star has been dealing with discomfort in his left knee for several weeks.
Earlier this season, inflammation in the same knee shortened one of his pitching appearances, and the Dodgers have continued to monitor his condition carefully.
Manager Dave Roberts said the decision to perform the procedure now is intended to help manage the irritation and allow Ohtani to benefit from the additional recovery time during the All-Star break.
The Dodgers remain optimistic that the treatment will help Ohtani return to his normal role in the pitching rotation once he has fully recovered.
