Commonwealth Games 2026: Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage Emerges as a Rising Javelin Star

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has become one of the most exciting names in international athletics after producing a series of impressive performances in the javelin throw ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The 23-year-old athlete gained global attention at the 2026 Rome Diamond League, where he delivered a remarkable 92.62-metre throw. The effort currently stands as the best javelin throw in the world this season and the second-best by an Asian athlete in history.

Reflecting on the achievement, Pathirage said he felt the throw was something special the moment the javelin left his hand.

“When I released the javelin, I thought it could be an Asian record. I was happy from the bottom of my heart,” he said.

His outstanding performance also made history by making him the first Sri Lankan and only the fourth Asian athlete to throw beyond the 90-metre mark in international competition.

Pathirage’s rise continues the recent success of South Asian athletes in the javelin event, following notable achievements by Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and India’s Neeraj Chopra on the global stage.

The young thrower, who hails from Kalutara, south of Colombo, believes there is still room for improvement despite his record-breaking performance.

With the 2026 Commonwealth Games underway, Sri Lankan fans will be hoping Pathirage can continue his excellent form and compete for another major international medal.
