WhatsApp Launches New Private AI Chat Feature for Sensitive Conversations
WhatsApp has introduced a new “incognito” mode for chats with Meta AI, offering users a more private way to discuss sensitive topics through artificial intelligence.
The new feature allows users to hold AI conversations without saving chat history on their devices or company servers after the session ends.
According to Meta, the feature was designed for people who want greater privacy while discussing personal subjects such as health, relationships, or financial matters with AI tools.
Will Cathcart, head of WhatsApp, said many users were interested in AI assistance but remained concerned about sharing personal information online. The new privacy-focused mode aims to address those concerns.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the feature as a major step toward more secure AI interactions, saying conversations are not stored on company servers.
The company explained that the new system works differently from WhatsApp’s existing end-to-end encryption, but still provides a high level of privacy protection for users.
At launch, the incognito mode supports only text-based AI chats and does not currently process images or media files.
Meta also said its AI systems will continue to block harmful, unsafe, or illegal requests through built-in safety measures.
Cybersecurity experts have welcomed the privacy improvements but also noted potential challenges. Some specialists say disappearing conversations could make it harder to investigate harmful incidents or review problematic AI responses if needed.
Meta AI was integrated into WhatsApp last year and is also available across platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
The company has continued expanding its AI services and is expected to invest heavily in AI infrastructure and technology development in the coming years.
