World Cup 2026: Why Host Stadiums Are Being Renamed for the Tournament

Several major stadiums hosting matches for the upcoming FIFA World Cup are temporarily changing their names as part of tournament branding rules.

Across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, venues are removing or covering corporate sponsor names and adopting neutral, city-based titles during the event, which begins next week and runs through July 19.

At AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys, workers have been covering the stadium’s corporate branding as part of the rebranding process. During the tournament, the venue will be referred to as “Dallas Stadium.”

The change is part of FIFA’s policy that ensures exclusive commercial rights for official tournament sponsors. As a result, stadiums cannot display names associated with companies that are not part of FIFA’s sponsorship program.

Similar changes are taking place at other venues. In Seattle, Lumen Field will temporarily operate under the name “Seattle Stadium,” while MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will be referred to as “New York New Jersey Stadium.”

In California, Levi’s Stadium will be renamed “San Francisco Bay Area Stadium” for the duration of the competition. Meanwhile, BC Place in Vancouver is expected to retain its original name as it is publicly owned.

The practice of rebranding stadiums is common during major international sporting events to ensure consistent sponsorship visibility and avoid conflicts with existing commercial agreements.

Organizers say the approach helps maintain a uniform branding structure across all host cities throughout the tournament.
