Watch Out for ‘Kissing Bug’ Disease: Symptoms and Risks

NEW YORK – September 19, 2025 – Health experts are urging residents in the southern United States to stay vigilant as Chagas disease, a potentially life-threatening parasitic infection, continues to spread.

The disease is transmitted through blood-sucking insects called “kissing bugs.” Infection can sometimes remain silent for years, but more than 25% of cases develop serious complications, including heart failure and sudden death.

Officials advise monitoring for early symptoms, which may include fever, fatigue, body aches, and swelling near the bite site. While often mild at first, untreated infections can severely affect the heart and digestive system over time.

Residents in affected regions are encouraged to take precautions against kissing bug bites, such as sealing cracks in homes, using insect screens, and keeping outdoor lights away from sleeping areas. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing severe complications.
